Founded centuries before Rome, Ascoli Piceno is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Italy. The historic centre is built entirely in white travertine, the local stone that gives the city a unique luminosity and elegance. Walking its streets is like travelling through two thousand years of history.
The Quintana: the medieval jousting tournament in summer
Every year, on the first Sunday of August, Ascoli transforms into a fully medieval city for the Quintana: an equestrian jousting tournament in period costume in which the six districts of the city compete in Piazza del Popolo. Historical processions, flag-throwers, musicians and the tension of the tournament: a unique spectacle worth the journey.

The original olive ascolane
The olive ascolane eaten directly in Ascoli Piceno are a completely different experience from the industrial versions. Stuffed with minced meat and fried to order, they are the noble street food of Piceno. Best enjoyed at the stalls in Piazza del Popolo or in the town centre restaurants with a glass of Rosso Piceno DOC.
